They say there’s always room for desserts and I absolutely concur. I spent a good eight days in Melbourne, just got back this morning at 5.30 am and am craving for some milky, creamy and cold goodness at this moment.
Melbourne’s well-known for its excellent coffees but let’s not forget its amazing Gelatos and ice-creams as well. Below are three places I’ve tried and I highly recommend #1 and #3.
If you follow INSIDER food on Facebook, you would have probably known of this place ’cause it recently featured Pidapipo’s in-store Nutella tap. And if you’re a HUGE fan of both Nutella and gelato, this is a place you would love to get your Gelato fix!
Interior of the store.
The flavors available can be seen on the wall above. We went for Pistachio, Peanut Butter, Salted Caramel and of course the Nutella Swirl. The Nutella Swirl comes with nutella, where they’d make a hole in the middle-top of the gelato and pour Nutella into it nomz. The other flavors don’t come with Nutella but you can add 1 AUD for that desired dose!
Nutella Swirl + Salted Caramel. I loved this combination! The sweetness of the Nutella complemented the Salted Caramel’s tinge of saltiness. The Pistachio and Peanut Butter were relatively more flavorful and rich. All four flavors had FANTASTIC CREAMINESS.
Pidapipo also nailed the texture of its gelato – it was really soft and silky yet not losing that important element of firmness which is felt the moment you scoop it with a spoon.
I also like the fact that it stores its Gelato in metal containers with lids on – this is a sign of good, real Gelato as it protects the Gelato while plastic containers usually imply that they contain food stabilizers #foodfact.
Addresses: 299 Lygon Street, Carlton 3053 & 85 Chapel Street, Windsor
(Note: Chapel Street’s the outlet where you can see the Nutella tap!)
Opening Hours: 12 noon – 11 pm daily
Prices: 4 AUD/scoop, 6 AUD/two scoops, 7 AUD/three scoops
#2 N2 Extreme Gelato
This place prides itself on its indulgent creations that are not only extremely photogenic but taste awesome too. No such thing as skinny, low-fat desserts when you’re at N2 Extreme Gelato.
The winning point of this Gelato? Freshness guaranteed, for it is made on order with the use of liquid nitrogen. The science behind it allows to be served at that optimal temperature of -6 degree Celsius and the result: AMAZINGLY SMOOTH TEXTURES.
We tried the Broadway Moment – Vanilla Gelato with honeycomb, dipped in chocolate + salted caramel syringe. The honeycomb was fresh and crunchy. The Gelato itself was undoubtedly smooth and creamy but a little too sweet in my opinion. Also, I thought that it would be better if the caramel was the thicker, maltier kind as it was too liquid-y.
It’s absolutely fresh and tastes great but I personally feel these factors aren’t strong enough to make me want to pay the steep price of 9 AUD per cup again.
Addresses: 329 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy 3065 & 18 Sutherland Street, Melbourne 3000
Opening Hours: 1 pm – 11 pm daily
Prices: 7 AUD/cup of sorbet, 9 AUD/cup of non-sorbets
#3 Timboon Fine Ice Cream
MY FAVORITE DESSERT OF THE ENTIRE TRIP. My parents’ too. It’s egg free and gluten free, with the exception of the Passionfruit Pavlova which contains egg white. Only fresh milk and fresh cream are used in the creation of this amazing thing here.
I know perfection is highly subjective but the texture of this ice-cream is my kind of perfection – CHEWY-STICKY. This is one solid, good ice-cream I could and would eat over and over again. Really damn good. I LOVE IT.
We tried the Apple Pie, White Chocolate & Raspberry, Banana and Espresso. Fantastic flavors they have.
My personal favorites would be the Apple Pie and Banana as the essence of the flavors were well-captured and adequately bold yet not too sweet. DELICIOUS. Coffee lovers are likely to love the Espresso because it was strong and unpretentious. I wouldn’t recommend the White Choc & Raspberry for most people as it was overly sweet and tasted slightly weird on some mouthfuls.
(I just found out that its Vanilla flavor is award-winning.)
If you ever chance upon Timboon Fine Ice-cream, please do yourself a favor and grab a scoop or two. ONE OF THE BEST ICE-CREAMS I’VE EVER HAD. And I do hope you’ll love its texture as much as I do 🙂
Address: The Railway Yard, 1 Bailey Street, Timboon 3268 & Alcove Cafe, 34 Lord Street, Port Campbell 3269 (Great Ocean Road!)
Opening Hours: 10 am – 5 pm daily & 11 am – 8 pm respectively (opening times vary)
Price: 6 AUD/scoop, 8 AUD/two scoops
I always make it a point to give a proper ending to all my posts but this time round all I’d say is: Good Gelatos/ice-creams are truly worth getting fat for.
